Struggling With Breastfeeding? Pediatrician-Backed Tips for New Parents
Extensive research supports breastfeeding as the ideal path for new mothers and their little ones. But just because something is natural and healthy doesn’t mean it will always be straightforward. Many women struggle with breastfeeding, so if you’re having challenges, you are certainly not alone.
The team at Hubbard Pediatric Group, LLC, led by Holly Hubbard, MD, is here to help your baby get the best possible start in life. If you’ve chosen to breastfeed, we’re here to support you throughout that process, including when you encounter roadblocks.
Let’s examine some tips for successful breastfeeding. Of course, if you’re having issues, we encourage you to reach out to schedule an in-person breastfeeding support visit.
Start breastfeeding right away
One of the best ways to establish a breastfeeding routine is to begin the process as soon as possible after giving birth. At this point, your body will already be producing colostrum, a thick, concentrated form of milk that includes all the nutrients and fluids that your baby needs during their first days of life. Colostrum is also rich in antibodies.
Skin-to-skin contact prompts infants to search for the nipple and begin breastfeeding. Once your baby latches on and begins feeding, your body releases hormones that help stabilize your mood and encourage bonding.
Getting an early start on breastfeeding can help both you and your infant get used to the process. It paves the way for continued success.
Nourish yourself to nourish your baby
Your body goes through so many changes during pregnancy, and even the “easiest” labor and delivery experience will still take a toll. After your baby arrives, it’s easy to become so focused on meeting their needs that you forget to take good care of yourself.
If you’ve chosen to breastfeed, your body needs plenty of nourishment to be able to make the milk your little one will consume throughout each day. This begins with proper hydration, which doesn’t come easily for many women.
If you find consuming large volumes of fluids to be daunting, try keeping healthy beverages close by and sipping on them periodically. This approach can help you stay hydrated without feeling bloated or overly full.
Be sure you’re eating enough food each day, and that your meals and snacks are filled with fruit, vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats. Breastfeeding burns a substantial number of calories, so be sure you’re fueling your body properly.
Find the best breastfeeding position
Breastfeeding can take up a considerable amount of time, so work to find a position that is comfortable for both you and your baby. There are several different types of breastfeeding “holds” you can try, and numerous videos demonstrating techniques.
Try to avoid leaning forward as you breastfeed. It’s normal to want to watch your child to ensure they’re latched on properly, but leaning forward can place considerable strain on your neck, shoulders, and back.
Consider using a breastfeeding pillow or nursing stool to bring your baby up to chest level. This can make things more comfortable for both of you.
Pay attention to the skin on your breasts
Breast skin can be fragile, and it doesn’t take much to damage this tender area of the body. If you use nursing pads to absorb leaking breastmilk, be sure to change them often so your skin doesn’t suffer from staying wet for long periods of time.
On the flip side, use a high-quality moisturizer to keep the skin on your breasts hydrated. There are several products marketed specifically toward new mothers, but your favorite non-greasy cream or lotion will also work.
Don’t wait to ask for help when needed
Far too many women feel discouraged or even ashamed when they encounter difficulties with breastfeeding. It’s important to understand that many women experience some challenges as they adjust to breastfeeding. There’s nothing to feel bad about, and no need to struggle on your own.
The longer you wait to ask for help with breastfeeding issues, the more difficult things can become. No matter what type of challenge you’re facing, the team at Hubbard Pediatric Group can help you find a workable solution.
